disamenities adversely affected the ability of the population to absorb nutrients. It appears more likely, however, that the modest late nineteenth century upward trend in heights reflects a slow advance in nutritional status and only modest advances in income per capita. The poor nutritional status of mothers in late nineteenth century Montreal has been documented by infant birth weights.23 The unchanging dominance of food in the household budget of Ontario workers before 1900, on the other hand, may reflect more than the usual Engel income-consumption relation.24 The biological systems of workers in the new industrial surroundings may have been temporarily less efficient in absorbing nutrients. Pioneering dietary studies nonetheless indicate little advance in the caloric intake of workers.
